The Refurbished TEM2U-8820 Diesel Locomotive: High-Quality Shunting and Hauling Operations in Ukraine and Beyond

Amid the current challenges facing the industry—against the backdrop of a full-scale war in Ukraine, energy instability, logistical constraints, and a shortage of specialized equipment—the efficiency and reliability of rail shunting operations play a key role in ensuring the continued operation of enterprises and supply chains.

UKRAINIAN FREIGHT LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY (UFLC) offers reliable solutions and consistent technical support even under the most challenging conditions. We are pleased to present the result of two years of work by our highly qualified specialists and engineers—the TEM2U-8820 diesel locomotive, fully refurbished following a major overhaul.

This locomotive was built in 1989 and was refurbished through a complete overhaul by our specialists in 2024–2025 in accordance with the highest quality standards and in compliance with the requirements of current repair regulations for locomotives of this series.

Design and Technical Equipment

The locomotive’s equipment is mounted on a main frame supported by two three-axle bogies. Weight from the main frame is transferred to each bogie via four sliding supports. Tractive force from the bogies is transmitted to the main frame via two kingpins located at the center of the bogies.

The locomotive has a hood-type body and consists of five main sections: the body above the diesel engine, the body above the equipment compartment, the cooling compartment, the driver’s cab, and the body above the battery compartment. For ease of maintenance and repair, as well as quick access to the locomotive’s units and assemblies, side doors and roof hatches are provided. Special attention has been paid to soundproofing and thermal insulation in the driver’s cab, which significantly enhances the working comfort of the locomotive crew.

Driver's Cab: Comfort and Safety

The control cab is equipped with main and auxiliary control panels, as well as a portable control panel. The main and auxiliary control panels house control devices, as well as monitoring and measuring instruments that display the operating status of the power plant. For comfortable operation during the winter, a heater and a foot warmer for the engineer are installed. The cab is equipped with electric motors with windshield fans, an ALS system, a speedometer, and other safety devices.

Electrical equipment is installed in the equipment compartment located in front of the driver's cab.

Power plant and auxiliary equipment

The diesel compartment houses a diesel generator, a brake compressor, auxiliary electrical machines, and other auxiliary units. The power plant consists of a 6-cylinder PD1M turbocharged diesel engine with a power output of 882 kW (1,200 hp), rigidly coupled to a GP-300BU2 DC traction generator with a power output of 780 kW. This combination provides a continuous tractive force of up to 21 t/s in both train and shunting modes.

Overhaul 2024–2025

During 2024–2025, the diesel locomotive underwent a complete overhaul in accordance with current instructions and regulations for locomotives of this series, specifically:

  • a complete overhaul of the diesel engine with the replacement of 95% of spare parts and components with new ones, including the cylinder block, camshaft with bearing shells, and the connecting rod-piston group (crankshaft bearing liners, pistons, piston rings, cylinder heads and bushings, valve mechanism), exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, speed governor, fuel system, oil pumps, and more;
  • complete overhaul of all units and assemblies of auxiliary equipment with the replacement of 80% of spare parts and components with new ones, including the drive and gearbox of the refrigeration unit’s shaft fan, the compressor drive and two engine units, the fuel injection unit, the front and rear bogie cooling fans, intermediate supports and cardan shafts, replacement of the collectors and sections of the refrigeration unit shaft;
  • complete overhaul of the GP-300 traction generator, including replacement of the armature bearings, repair of the main and auxiliary poles, grinding and re-slotting of the armature collector, and replacement of insulators, brush holders, and brushes;
  • complete overhaul of ED118 traction motors, the two-motor MVT-25/9 unit, and the electric motors of the P22 oil and fuel booster units, including repair of armatures, main and auxiliary poles, repair of commutators, and repair of brush holders and their components;
  • complete overhaul of the running gear, specifically repair of bogie frames, brake-lever transmission, brake cylinders, hydraulic vibration dampers, etc., with replacement of all necessary spare parts and components;
  • complete inspection of wheel sets with replacement of wheel tires and overhaul of the second-stage axle boxes in accordance with the requirements of instructions VND32.0.07-001-2001 and CT-0165;
  • complete repair of couplers in accordance with the requirements of Standard STP 04-105:2018;
  • complete overhaul of braking and pneumatic equipment in accordance with the requirements of instruction CT-0058;
  • external inspection and hydraulic testing of air reservoirs in accordance with the requirements of instruction CT-CV-CL-CP-0050;
  • complete replacement of low-voltage electrical wiring, repair and partial replacement of high-voltage electrical wiring with new wiring, repair and partial replacement of electrical equipment with new components, complete repair and restoration of the main and auxiliary control panels;
  • complete overhaul with replacement of insulation and interior wall and ceiling paneling, trim, baseboards, and other decorative elements in the control cab.
  • A complete set of new piping for the water, oil, fuel, and pneumatic systems was manufactured.

A new 50KN-150R battery from a domestic manufacturer was installed on the diesel locomotive.

Rheostat and running tests and exterior painting

In March 2025, specialists from the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Research Institute of Rolling Stock Construction” conducted a technical inspection of the locomotive’s structure (body frame and bogies) and issued a positive conclusion regarding the extension of its service life by another 5 years, that is, through March 2030.

To confirm the locomotive’s technical readiness, rheostat tests were conducted on the modern CUBO-800 diagnostic complex—the only “dry rheostat” in Ukraine. Break-in and running tests took place on the access tracks of a specialized repair facility.

The exterior and interior painting was performed using high-quality two-component materials from the German brand Lankwitzer GmbH. A distinctive two-tone color scheme was chosen: sky blue RAL 5015 as the primary color, light blue RAL 5012 as the secondary color, with white elements in RAL 9010, and signal inserts in yellow RAL 1023 and red RAL 3020. The roof is metallic gray RAL 7047, and the passenger compartment is signal black RAL 9004.
