The TEM2U-8820 is a reliable piece of equipment designed for shunting and haulage operations, as well as for use at industrial facilities. And the high level of expertise among the engineers at the Ukrainian Freight Locomotive Company ensures that it will continue to operate efficiently and safely for many years to come.
Between 2024 and 2025, ULC specialists carried out a comprehensive set of works, thanks to which the diesel locomotive is—without exaggeration—as good as new. Here are the details.
Design and Technical Equipment
The locomotive’s equipment is mounted on the main frame, which rests on two three-axle bogies. Weight from the main frame is transferred to each bogie via four sliding supports. Tractive force from the bogies is transmitted to the main frame via two kingpins located at the center of the bogies.
The locomotive body is of the hooded type and consists of five main parts: the body above the diesel engine, the body above the equipment compartment, the cooling compartment, the driver’s cab, and the body above the battery compartment. Side doors and roof hatches are provided for ease of maintenance and repair, as well as quick access to the locomotive’s units and assemblies. Special attention has been paid to noise and thermal insulation in the driver’s cab, which significantly enhances the comfort of the locomotive crew.
Driver's Cab: Comfort and Safety
The control cab is equipped with main and auxiliary control panels, as well as a portable control panel. The main and auxiliary control panels house control devices, as well as monitoring and measuring instruments that display the operating status of the power plant. For comfortable operation during the winter, a heater and a foot warmer for the driver are installed. The cab is equipped with electric motors with window blowers, an ALS system, a speedometer, and other safety devices.
The electrical equipment room, located in front of the driver's cab, houses the electrical equipment.
Power plant and auxiliary equipment
The diesel compartment houses the diesel generator, brake compressor, auxiliary electrical machines, and other units. The power plant consists of a 6-cylinder PD1M turbocharged diesel engine with a power output of 882 kW (1,200 hp), rigidly coupled to a GP-300BU2 DC traction generator with a power output of 780 kW. This combination provides a continuous tractive force of up to 21 t/s in both train and shunting modes.
Rheostat and running tests, exterior painting
In March 2025, specialists from the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Research Institute of Rolling Stock Construction” conducted a technical inspection of the locomotive’s structure (body frame and bogies) and issued a positive conclusion regarding the extension of its service life by another 5 years—through March 2030.
To confirm the locomotive’s technical readiness, rheostat tests were conducted on the modern CUBO-800 diagnostic complex—the only “dry rheostat” in Ukraine. Break-in and running tests took place on the access tracks of a specialized repair facility.
The exterior and interior painting was performed using high-quality two-component materials from the German brand Lankwitzer GmbH. A distinctive two-tone color scheme was chosen: sky blue RAL 5015 as the primary color, light blue RAL 5012 as the secondary color, with white elements in RAL 9010, and signal inserts in yellow RAL 1023 and red RAL 3020. The roof is metallic gray RAL 7047, and the passenger compartment is signal black RAL 9004.
Warranties and Support
A warranty is provided for all work performed and replaced components. Upon request, the locomotive can be retrofitted with remote monitoring systems, diesel fuel consumption monitoring, wheel set lubricators, LED lighting, a radio station, or other equipment according to the customer’s needs.
